In 2022, the European Union (EU) achieved an average collection rate of 80.2% for glass packaging recycling, according to the latest data from Close the Glass Loop. This figure reflects a stable collection rate compared to previous years and indicates a significant increase in the volume of collected glass, reaching a record high of 12.4 million tonnes-an increase of approximately 542,000 tonnes over the previous year.
Adeline Farrelly, Secretary General of the European Container Glass Federation (FEVE), commented: "The rise in collected glass volumes showcases the resilience and commitment of the glass packaging value chain to boost the availability of post-consumer glass for the production of new glass bottles and jars."
To reach the ambitious goal of a 90% collection rate by 2030, Close the Glass Loop emphasized the need for further initiatives that promote the separate collection of glass packaging from households and the hospitality sector. Additionally, supporting investments that maximize glass recycling outputs toward a closed-loop system is crucial.
The organization highlighted the importance of National Platforms and National Action Plans in triggering the necessary actions to enhance glass collection and recycling within each EU Member State. This year, Close the Glass Loop welcomed two new National Platforms, Romania and the Netherlands.
Olivier Deweerdt, Secretary General of the European Federation of Glass Recyclers (FERVER), stated: "To achieve our 90% collection target, Close the Glass Loop national Platforms play a pivotal role. The exchange of best practices and support for projects and activities at the national level are vital for increasing and improving glass collection for recycling."
