Sustainable Glassmaking and Glass Recovery Highlighted at the 15th European Society of Glass (ESG) Conference

July 24, 2024
During the 15th European Society of Glass (ESG) Conference, held this week at Cambridge University, UK, sustainable glassmaking and glass recovery management were key topics of discussion. The conference ran concurrently with the 15th International Conference on the Structure of Non-Crystalline Materials and the Annual Conference of the Society of Glass Technology.
The Sustainability Session, titled "The Journey from Pollution to Prosperity," focused on strategies to increase glass recovery and utilization, as well as fostering collaboration between industry and academia. The two-day session kicked off with the NL Varshneya Memorial Lecture, delivered by Steve Whettingsteel from Krysteline Technologies, UK. His lecture, titled "A Closer Look at Sustainable Glass Recycling," explored the latest advances in sustainable glass recycling practices.

Following his presentation, Steve Whettingsteel was honored with an award by the Society of Glass Technology President, Prof. Arun Varshneya.

Subsequently, 14 additional papers were presented by experts from both industry and academia. Presenters included representatives from glass manufacturers AGC and Sisecam, glass suppliers like Picvisa, SEFPRO, and FIC UK, and consulting firms such as Arup and Solar Recycling Solutions.

The conference also featured a banquet with Ludovic Valette from O-I Glass as the guest speaker. The week began with a presentation by invited guest Edgar Dutra Zanotto from the Department of Materials Engineering at the Federal University of São Carlos, Brazil. This was followed by the Michael Cable Memorial Lecture, delivered by Manoj Choudhary, Adjunct Professor of Materials Science & Engineering at The Ohio State University, on Monday. Choudhary`s talk addressed the progress and challenges in decarbonizing industrial glass melting processes.
